Air Battle Commander

A basic SHMUP by JBV (a.k.a Once) made from 19/08/2022 to 16/09/2022 for the "Basic Shmup Showcase" Jam organized by Krystman.

How to play:

  • [Arrow keys] to move
  • [Z] (button 1, square) to shoot
  • [X] (button 2, cross) to restart on the gameover/victory screen
  • Kill 10 enemies to move to the next wave

Features:

  • 10 levels
  • 2 difficulty modes (you will be prompted to choose after each death)
  • procedurally generated background (sea+islands) and foreground (dynamic clouds)
  • 6 types of enemies with different behaviours and multiple attack phases

Design decisions:

  • first few waves teach you how enemies move and attack
  • player is weak but nimble, it is sometimes better to avoid enemies and wait for an opening
  • continuous shooting is not possible, your gun will overheat, take a break
  • enemies don't stop and wait to be shot at, they will try to fly past you and come back later
  • when hurt, look at the clouds, some will help you regain health points

The game looks nice, I like the seamless transition from the title screen to the actual game. The sea and islands setting is also very nice. The clouds dissolving with shots and hiding hearts is a great mechanic, I just feel they should move at a different speed from the enemies.

I don't know if it's a bug or on purpose, but the ship doesn't move diagonally, or very infrequently. I also felt the enemies were too spongy. I wouldn't mind having to take much more per wave if I could mow them down more easily !

Thanks for the comments ! You are right, the ship does not move diagonally, I will add that in the next version.

Enemies are spongy and there are only a few per wave, by design. But it is a recurring criticism so I will consider changing that in the next version. Or perhaps add another game mode that is more "bullet hell" with continuous fire and weak (but numerous) enemies.

Flying through a cloud to get a heart is incredibly satisfying I love the graphic and the gameplay feels really good

Full of retro feels.

I feel like when your overheating you could give a message saying overheated.

Fairly slow.  Nice graphics.
